SI Joint Fusion and Pain Treatment
TreatmentsSacroiliac (SI) joint fusion is a surgical procedure that is used to stabilize the sacroiliac joint, which is an L-shaped joint in the pelvis that connects the ilium and the sacrum. The joint acts as a cushion for the spine, helping to absorb the shock of our movements.
Problems with the SI joint can cause lower back and leg pain that can interfere with a person’s function and ability to go on about their daily activities.
If you’re tired of suffering from lower back pain and aren’t getting the relief you need, Back Pain Centers of America is here to help. Give us a call at 1.844.201.1308 to learn more about our minimally invasive procedures that have helped thousands get fast relief from debilitating back pain.
Benefits of an SI Joint Fusion
Patients whose SI pain isn’t relieved by conservative treatments and those that are experiencing debilitating pain that interferes with their ability to function will benefit from SI joint fusion. Patients can find relief from their pain and gain back their mobility.
Our minimally invasive SI joint pain treatment offers several benefits over traditional open surgery, including:
- A quick recovery
- Outpatient options
- Small incision, usually around 1 inch
- Minimal scarring
Most patients can go home the same day of their SI joint surgery and get back to their regular activities in a few short weeks.
Conditions and Symptoms Treated
SI joint dysfunction and related conditions can be very painful and interfere with walking and other activities. SI joint fusion can offer relief from symptoms such as:
- Pain in the lower back, pelvis, hips, buttocks, and thighs
- Stiffness
- Difficulty walking and standing
- Limited range of motion
How to Prepare for a Sacroiliac Joint Fusion
You will be given specific preparation instructions before your SI joint surgery. You may be asked to do the following in preparation for your procedure:
- Stop taking some medications and supplements – Certain medications and supplements are known to increase the risk of bleeding. You will be advised as to which medications and supplements you need to stop taking and for how long before your SI joint procedure.
- Stop smoking – Smoking has been found to slow recovery following surgery. You may be asked to stop smoking for a period of time before and after your surgery.
- Fast for 6-12 hours – You will be required to fast before your procedure and will be advised as to how long before you will need to stop eating and drinking.
- Arrange a ride home – You will not be able to drive after your procedure. Arrange to have someone drop you off and pick you up on the day of your surgery.
Failing to follow your preparation instructions may result in the postponement of your SI joint procedure.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Minimally invasive SI joint fusion is performed through a tiny incision that measures approximately 1 inch. This small incision will be made along the side of your buttock, and a tube will be inserted that will allow the surgeon to insert the surgical tools and rods for the procedure. Fluoroscopic live imaging facilitates the surgeon to accurately place the rods that will fuse your SI joint. The entire procedure takes approximately one hour.
Once completed, the incision will be closed and you will be sent to a recovery room where you will be monitored for a few hours. Most patients can go home the same day.
SI Joint Fusion Recovery
Your surgeon will advise you as to when you can return to your normal activities. In most cases, patients fully recover within 4 to 6 weeks after minimally invasive SI joint surgery and return to work as soon as a week or two following surgery, depending on their occupation.
Post-surgical pain can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Applying heat and cold can also provide relief of any pain and inflammation, which is usually minimal with tissue-sparing procedures.
You may be prescribed physical therapy to assist you in your rehabilitation.
