Thoracic spine surgery offers a patient many benefits, beginning with relief from debilitating back pain that can limit function. Minimally invasive procedures can be used to treat most conditions that affect the thoracic spine. These procedures offer patients several benefits over traditional open back surgery, such as a quicker recovery and minimal scarring.

Specifics of preparation will depend on the type of thoracic spine treatment you are having. You will be given preparation instructions before surgery, the following being common examples:
- Stop smoking – Smoking may slow your recovery and you may be asked to stop smoking for a specified period before and after surgery.
- Stop taking certain medications – Certain medications and supplements interfere with your blood’s ability to clot, increasing the risk of bleeding. You will be told which medications to stop and for how long.
- Fast for 6 to 12 hours – You will need to fast before your thoracic spine surgery and will be told when to stop eating and drinking.
- Arrange a ride home – You won’t be able to drive after your surgery and need to arrange a ride in advance.
What to Expect
Minimally invasive thoracic spine surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. You will receive anesthesia and sedation and lie on your stomach for the procedure. A small incision measuring approximately 1-inch will be made where you are having thoracic spine pain and a special type of X-ray (fluoroscopy) will provide the surgeon with real-time images during the procedure to ensure accuracy. Depending on the condition being treated, the surgeon may perform more than one type of procedure, such as one to remove a portion of a spinal disc or bone spur and another to stabilize the spine.
Once the damage has been repaired, the incision will be closed and covered, and you will be sent to a recovery room where you will spend time being monitored.
Thoracic spine surgery recovery can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. Your doctor will let you know when you can resume certain activities and go back to work. Any pain can be managed using pain medication and by applying heat and cold to the affected area.
Physical therapy may be prescribed as part of your thoracic spine surgery recovery. The physical therapist will teach you how to move and go about your daily tasks safely as you recover, as well as teach you exercises to help restore your flexibility and range of motion.
